Our Food is Chapter 8 of Class 3 Environmental Studies from Our Wondrous World. The chapter helps children understand why we need different kinds of food and how food supports a healthy and active body. Through Shirin’s story, children learn that eating only a few foods is not enough and that a variety of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and homemade foods helps us stay strong and healthy.
Students explore seasonal foods, regional food habits, and different tastes. They learn that different fruits and vegetables are available in different seasons and that people in different parts of India eat a variety of foods. The chapter also explains that we eat different parts of plants, including roots, leaves, fruits, stems, and seeds, and introduces foods obtained from animals such as milk, curd, ghee, cheese, and paneer.
The chapter encourages children to understand balanced eating, healthy food choices, seasonal foods, and avoiding food waste. Activities include identifying foods eaten regularly, listing seasonal fruits and vegetables, drawing different thalis, preparing fruit chaat or salad, and thinking about food to serve a guest.
