That unusual number is called an outlier, and it has the power to change how we understand data. This playsheet helps you explore how outliers affect mean, median, mode, and range. Once you see how one number can shift results, you begin to understand why statisticians pay close attention to outliers when analyzing information.

 

As you work through each activity, you’ll start by reviewing how each measure works. You’ll calculate the mean by adding all values and dividing by the number of data points. Then you’ll notice how an outlier can pull the mean up or down, making it seem higher or lower than what feels typical. These examples help you understand that the mean can be sensitive to unusual numbers.

 

Next, you’ll study the median—the middle value when numbers are sorted. You’ll see that an outlier rarely changes the median, especially when the data set is large. This stability makes the median useful when you want a result that is not influenced by extremes. You begin to realize why the median can sometimes give a more accurate picture of the data than the mean.
