When you explore Biology, Chapter “Ecosystem”, NCERT, you begin to understand how living organisms interact with each other and with their physical environment. You see how an ecosystem functions as a unit, combining biotic components like producers, consumers and decomposers with abiotic factors such as air, water and soil. You realise that even a small pond can demonstrate complex ecological relationships. This helps you view nature as an interconnected system rather than isolated parts.

As you study ecosystem structure, you strengthen your understanding of concepts like stratification, trophic levels and standing crop. You observe how producers form the base of food chains and how energy moves from one trophic level to another. You connect this to the 10% law of energy transfer and recognise why energy flow is always unidirectional. This builds clarity in ecological reasoning.

When you examine productivity, you learn the difference between gross primary productivity (GPP) and net primary productivity (NPP). You understand how solar energy drives life processes and how only a small fraction of photosynthetically active radiation supports the entire biosphere. You develop analytical skills by comparing productivity across ecosystems such as forests and oceans.
