When you explore Science, Chapter “Coal and Petroleum”, NCERT, you begin to understand how some of the fuels you use every day were formed millions of years ago. You notice that coal, petroleum and natural gas are called fossil fuels because they were formed from the remains of plants and animals. You reflect on how these natural resources are limited. This learning helps you see why conservation is important.
As you read closely, you strengthen your vocabulary by learning terms like carbonisation, fossil fuels, refining and petrochemicals. You observe how dead vegetation slowly converted into coal under high pressure and temperature. You connect how petroleum was formed from tiny sea organisms buried under layers of sand and clay. This builds clarity in understanding natural fuel formation.
When you examine the products of coal, you develop analytical thinking. You learn about coke, coal tar and coal gas and how they are used in industries. You also explore how petroleum is refined to obtain petrol, diesel, kerosene, lubricating oil and LPG. You understand why petroleum is often called “black gold.” This strengthens your scientific reasoning.
