Figure Out the Main Idea

Want to become a stronger reader? In the Figure Out the Main Idea playsheet, you’ll practice finding the most important thought in a passage. Every paragraph has details, but there’s always one central idea holding them together. By focusing on that, you’ll improve your ability to read with purpose and understand texts more deeply.

As you go through the activities, you’ll learn how to separate main ideas from supporting details. Some sentences give examples, others add descriptions, but only one captures the author’s key message. By spotting that sentence or idea, you’ll unlock the heart of the text and see how everything else connects to it.

These exercises train you to think critically and make decisions based on evidence. You’ll practice asking questions like: “What is the passage mostly about?” or “What point is the author trying to make?” This helps you develop strategies you can use not just in reading, but in all areas of learning.
