Transport and Communication

Transport and Communication is Chapter 7 of the NCERT Class 12 Geography textbook India: People and Economy. This chapter explores the importance of transport and communication networks in supporting economic development, regional connectivity, and national integration. Students learn how goods, services, people, ideas, and information move across the country through different modes of transport and communication. The chapter introduces the major transportation systems in India, including roadways, railways, waterways, airways, and pipelines, along with their role in connecting production centres with markets and consumers.
 

The chapter explains the development and significance of National Highways, Golden Quadrilateral, North-South and East-West Corridors, Bharatmala Pariyojana, Indian Railways, Konkan Railway, National Waterways, ports, air transport, and pipeline networks. Students examine how geographical conditions, technology, infrastructure, and economic needs influence the growth of transport systems. The chapter also highlights the importance of inland waterways, oceanic routes, regional air connectivity through the UDAN Scheme, and the expanding oil and gas pipeline network in supporting India's economic activities.
 

The chapter further discusses the evolution of communication systems, including postal services, telephones, internet, radio, television, and satellite communication. Learners study the role of INSAT, IRS satellites, Doordarshan, Akashvani, and digital communication networks in information sharing, education, disaster management, weather forecasting, and national development.
