Planning

Planning, from Class 12 Business Studies, Business Studies, and the NCERT curriculum, introduces students to one of the most fundamental functions of management. The chapter explains planning as deciding in advance what to do and how to do it. Students learn how planning bridges the gap between present situations and future goals by setting objectives and selecting the best course of action from available alternatives. The chapter highlights the significance of planning in every organisation, whether public or private, and demonstrates how managers use planning to achieve predetermined objectives effectively and efficiently.
 

The chapter examines the importance, features, and limitations of planning in detail. Students explore how planning provides direction, reduces uncertainty, minimizes wasteful activities, promotes innovation, facilitates decision-making, and establishes standards for controlling organisational performance. Important characteristics such as planning being goal-oriented, primary, pervasive, continuous, futuristic, decision-oriented, and a mental exercise are discussed. The chapter also explains practical limitations including rigidity, dynamic business environments, reduced creativity, high costs, time consumption, and the fact that planning does not guarantee success.
