Planning, from Class 12 Business Studies, Business Studies, and the NCERT curriculum, introduces students to one of the most fundamental functions of management. The chapter explains planning as deciding in advance what to do and how to do it. Students learn how planning bridges the gap between present situations and future goals by setting objectives and selecting the best course of action from available alternatives. The chapter highlights the significance of planning in every organisation, whether public or private, and demonstrates how managers use planning to achieve predetermined objectives effectively and efficiently.

The chapter examines the importance, features, and limitations of planning in detail. Students explore how planning provides direction, reduces uncertainty, minimizes wasteful activities, promotes innovation, facilitates decision-making, and establishes standards for controlling organisational performance. Important characteristics such as planning being goal-oriented, primary, pervasive, continuous, futuristic, decision-oriented, and a mental exercise are discussed. The chapter also explains practical limitations including rigidity, dynamic business environments, reduced creativity, high costs, time consumption, and the fact that planning does not guarantee success. Through these concepts, learners understand both the strengths and challenges associated with the planning function.

A major portion of the chapter focuses on the planning process and types of plans. Students learn the systematic steps of planning, including setting objectives, developing premises, identifying alternatives, evaluating alternatives, selecting the best alternative, implementation, and follow-up action. The chapter further introduces various plans such as objectives, strategies, policies, procedures, methods, rules, programmes, and budgets, along with the distinction between single-use and standing plans. By studying this chapter, learners develop skills in strategic planning, forecasting, budgeting, policy formulation, resource allocation, managerial decision-making, and performance management, which are essential for understanding organisational effectiveness and business success.
