Motivation and Emotion, from Class 11 Psychology, Psychology, and the NCERT curriculum, examines the forces that energise, direct, and sustain human behaviour. The chapter explains motivation as a goal-directed process arising from needs, drives, and incentives. Students learn about the motivational cycle, which begins with a need, creates a state of drive and arousal, leads to goal-directed behaviour, and finally results in need satisfaction. The chapter introduces different types of motives, including biological motives such as hunger, thirst, and sex, as well as psychosocial motives such as achievement, affiliation, power, curiosity, and exploration, which influence human behaviour in everyday life.
The chapter also explores important theories of motivation, particularly Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which organises human needs into physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualisation levels. Students understand how individuals strive to satisfy different needs and how these needs influence personality development and behaviour. Alongside motivation, the chapter introduces the concept of emotion as a complex pattern involving physiological arousal, subjective feelings, and cognitive interpretation. Learners study basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust, as well as the ways emotions are expressed through facial expressions, gestures, body language, verbal communication, and non-verbal behaviour.
A major focus of the chapter is the relationship between culture and emotion, showing how emotional expression and emotional labeling vary across societies while some basic emotions remain universally recognised. Students also learn practical strategies for managing negative emotions, examination anxiety, stress, anger, and emotional disturbances, including self-awareness, cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques, self-monitoring, and positive thinking. The chapter concludes by highlighting the importance of positive emotions such as hope, optimism, gratitude, and happiness in promoting emotional well-being, resilience, healthy relationships, and overall psychological adjustment.
